Hyundai Santa Fe XL

With the introduction of the fourth-generation Santa Fe in 2019, Hyundai repositioned it from a three- to a two-row model. But the automaker continued selling the outgoing three-row version for another year as the Santa Fe XL. It bridges the gap between the smaller fourth-gen Santa Fe and the 2020 debut of the automaker’s all-new three-row model, the Palisade. Owners of the Santa Fe XL rate it highly for its ample V6 power, comfortable ride, and long list of available features. On the downside, some find its third row a bit too cramped (which is something the larger Palisade addresses). Additionally, most advanced driving aids, such as adaptive cruise control and forward collision mitigation, are only available on the highest trim level – and even then they are optional.

Hyundai Santa Fe XL Model Lineup

The Santa Fe XL is a three-row version of the Hyundai’s midsize crossover SUV, the Santa Fe. It’s essentially a continuation of the third-generation Santa Fe, which went from three to two rows of seating with the debut of its fourth generation in 2019. A one-year-only model, the Santa Fe XL was discontinued in 2020, after being supplanted in the lineup by the all-new three-row Palisade.

Under the hood, the Santa Fe XL employs a 3.3-liter V6 engine that makes 290 horsepower. It’s mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, which routes power to the front wheels unless the example is equipped with optional all-wheel drive. No hybrid or electric versions of the Santa Fe XL were produced.

Hyundai built the Santa Fe XL in two trims: the entry-level SE and the well-equipped Limited Ultimate. Standard features on the SE include dual-zone automatic climate control, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, Bluetooth connectivity, a 7.0-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Options include leather upholstery, heated front seats, a power-adjustable passenger seat, and blind-spot monitoring. Stepping up to the Limited Ultimate adds all of those options plus rear parking sensors, a panoramic sunroof, a heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, heated second-row captain’s chairs, and an upgraded 8.0-inch touchscreen with navigation and a surround-view camera. The top trim can be further augmented with an optional suite of driving aids, including adaptive cruise control, forward collision mitigation, and lane-departure warning.

2019 Hyundai Santa Fe XL - FWD

3.0

The vehicle style and operation are impressive. One my concerns is with the front seat belt system which is hard to adjust at times. Overall I do enjoy the vehicle and it has roominess for a family and cargo space when seats are lowered. My wife has complained about its lack of acceleration at times when going up hills.

2019 Hyundai Santa Fe XL - FWD

The Hyundai Santa Fe XL drives like a car. It is extremely easy to maneuver. My entire family prefers it own road trips due to comfort, quietness, style and ease of driving, both day and night - headlights are impressive! I am also attracted to the size of the SUV - not big and bulky, but CUTE for an SUV, holding 6 passengers comfortably with 2nd row captain chairs. I upgraded to the Santa Fe XL from the Santa Fe and do not regret it at all and only did because of rumors of the Santa Fe XL to be replaced by the Palisade. Love my SF XL!!!
