Hyundai Kona N

The Kona N injects Hyundai’s popular subcompact crossover with a major dose of fun. Like the other models from the automaker’s N performance division, it employs a rowdy turbocharged four-cylinder with nearly 300 horsepower. That mill, along with a host of other go-fast bits, transforms the Kona N from a ho-hum grocery-getter into a surprisingly capable hot hatch. As the model’s top trim, it also boasts a long list of standard features. However, some low-grade materials carry over from cheaper versions. Other notable downsides include a somewhat noisy cabin, especially at highway speeds, and a cramped rear seat.

Hyundai Kona N Model Lineup

The Kona N is a performance version of Hyundai’s subcompact crossover SUV, the Kona. It’s the only sport utility vehicle offered by the Korean automaker’s N division, which upgrades otherwise sedate models such as the Sonata with more powerful engines, stiffer suspension components, and larger wheels, tires, and brakes, among other changes.

Hyundai offers the Kona N in a single, well-equipped trim. Standard equipment includes LED headlights, keyless entry and ignition, leather upholstery, heated front seats, a digital instrument panel, and a 10.3-inch infotainment touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Standard safety tech and driving aids include blind-spot warning, forward collision mitigation, and lane-keeping assist; however, adaptive cruise control is not available on the Kona N.

Under the hood, the Kona N boasts a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 276 horsepower (and up to 286 hp in short bursts). Output is routed to the front wheels (only) via an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. An electronically controlled limited-slip differential is also standard equipment.
