Hyundai Kona Electric

One of the first small all-electric SUVs to hit the market back in 2019, the Kona Electric has since carved out a nice little spot for itself as a top pick in a growing segment. The battery-powered Hyundai offers an impressive EPA-estimated 258-mile range at a relatively low price, making it one of the more appealing EV options. On the downside, some Kona Electric owners note that the model falls short of their expectations when it comes to ride comfort and available space for passengers and their cargo.

Hyundai Kona Electric Model Lineup

The Kona Electric is an all-electric variant of Hyundai’s subcompact crossover SUV, the Kona. With seating for five, it’s the smallest all-electric sport-ute in Hyundai’s lineup, measuring over a foot shorter than the compact Ioniq 5.

The Kona Electric comes in three trims: the entry-level SEL, the mid-tier Limited, and the range-topping Ultimate (which was discontinued in 2022). Regardless of trim level, it comes well-equipped, including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and heated front seats as standard equipment. A 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen was also standard until 2022, when an 8.0-inch unit replaced it; meanwhile, a 10.3-inch display is available on higher trim levels. Several desirable active safety features are standard, too, including forward collision mitigation, lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot warning, while adaptive cruise control and parking sensors are optional. Other notable options include a sunroof, leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, and a wireless device charging pad.

Propelling the Kona Electric is a 64-kWh battery pack that fuels a 150-kW electric motor. The setup can send as much as 201 horsepower to the front wheels (only). On a full charge, it offers an EPA-estimated 258 miles of range – and some claim even better figures in real-world settings. Once depleted, the battery pack can be recharged in roughly nine hours when connected to a 240-volt household outlet. Connected to a DC fast charger, it can charge to 80% in about 75 minutes.
