Hyundai Kona

In 2018, Hyundai introduced a new subcompact crossover, the Kona. The spunky new model, named after a popular vacation destination in Hawaii, quickly gained popularity for its bold styling and impressive features. Owners also praise the Kona’s nimble handling, fuel efficiency, and comfortable interior. However, a few notable criticisms include its limited rear-seat legroom and somewhat firm ride – though, on the plus side, the latter gives it a sportier feel than some rivals. Overall, the Kona remains an appealing option thanks to its balance of value, quality, and practicality, traits that the Hyundai brand has come to embody in recent years.

Hyundai Kona Model Lineup

The Kona is a subcompact crossover SUV with seating for up to five passengers. Within Hyundai's lineup, it slots between the smaller Venue and the larger Tucson, and it also comes in two variants – the battery-powered Kona Electric and the performance-oriented Kona N – which are reviewed separately. The Kona’s most recent (first) generation debuted in 2017, and it received a model refresh for the 2022 model year, featuring updated styling and new tech features. Properly equipped, it can tow up to 1,500 pounds.

Hyundai offers the Kona in a range of trims, including the SE, SEL, SEL Plus, N Line, Limited, and Ultimate. Most employ a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 147 horsepower, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Stepping up to the N Line, Limited, or Ultimate trims brings a more powerful 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 175 hp, mated to a more responsive seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive is optional.

Even the base SE trim comes well-equipped with features, including a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration and some driver-assistance technologies, such as forward collision mitigation and lane-keeping assist. The SEL offers some desirable extras, such as heated front seats and blind-spot monitoring, while the SEL Plus further provides niceties such as a power-adjustable driver's seat, wireless device charging, and premium audio. In addition to a more powerful engine, the N Line adds sportier styling elements as well as more athletic suspension and steering tuning. The Limited offers leather upholstery and other upscale amenities, while the range-topping Ultimate comes fully loaded with features and advanced tech.

2018 Hyundai Kona SEL FWD

Great little car for a small family. Larger/taller people have a hard time being comfortable in it. Cargo space is sufficient but not huge. Great on gas. And features are great.

The Kona is fun to drive. It could use some additional features and maybe better mileage but overall it's great. Cruise control needs to be turned on each time which is a bit annoying.

2018 Hyundai Kona SEL FWD

I like everything about the vehicle except the pickup from a stop. It occasionally cuts out. Other than that, it is great!
