Honda Insight

In December 1999, the Honda Insight became the first hybrid car sold in America, beating the Toyota Prius to market by several months. But despite earning far better fuel economy, the tiny two-seat Insight quickly lost sales ground to its more practical four-door rival. That all changed in 2010, though, when Honda introduced a second-generation Insight that is far more Prius-like. Another redo in 2019 improved things even more, enlarging the backseat, adding more standard features, and increasing fuel economy from an EPA-rated 42 to 52 mpg (combined). Other pros for the Insight include its zippy handling and generous set of standard driving aids (for 2019 and later models). On the downside, some find its seats lacking in overall comfort and its powertrain slightly buzzy at times.

Honda Insight Model Lineup

The Insight is a compact car that features a hybrid powertrain. Honda has offered it in three different body styles through the years: a two-door two-seat hatchback from 2000 through 2006 (first generation), a four-door five-seat hatchback from 2010 through 2014 (second generation), and a four-door five-seat sedan from 2019 through 2022 (third generation). The model was discontinued in 2023 but is expected to be replaced by a new hybrid version of the Civic, which is due for the 2024 model year.

Second-generation models (2010-2014) employ a 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor and a small nickel-metal hydride battery pack. The combination produces 98 horsepower and is rated between 41 and 42 mpg in mixed driving, according to the EPA. With the debut of the third generation in 2019, the Insight was upgraded to a 1.5-liter four-cylinder paired with an electric motor and a small lithium-ion battery pack. They combine for a total of 151 hp and deliver 52 mpg in mixed driving, according to the EPA. All versions since 2010 utilize a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) that routes power to the front wheels (only).

Honda has sold the Insight in four main trims: the base (which was discontinued after 2015), the upgraded LX, the well-equipped EX, and the fully loaded Touring (which first appeared in 2019). Second-gen examples (2010-2014) come with relatively few features, but opting for the mid-range LX does at least add cruise control and an upgraded stereo with a USB port, while the upscale EX further offers Bluetooth connectivity and an available touchscreen navigation system. With the debut of the third-gen Insight in 2019, Honda increased the level of standard equipment substantially, adding LED headlights, keyless ignition, a 5.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, and a suite of driving aids (called Honda Sensing), which includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision mitigation, and lane-keeping assist. EX examples from 2019 and later also get an upgraded 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration and a second USB port, while the top-of-the-line Touring also boasts a sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, power-adjustable and heated front seats, and a 10-speaker premium audio system. Blind-spot monitoring became a standard safety feature in 2021.

Good value. Electric vehicles aren't quite there yet, so I'm happy with my first hybrid.

The engine noise especially uphill is loud. This vehicle has a sports mode and an econ mode it is like driving two different cars even with sports mode on you get 45 mpg. Love this car.

Great vehicle and gas mileage. Only concern is the high/ease of entry.

2019 Honda Insight Touring

The Honda Insight is an excellent choice for a 4-door hybrid. It gets the advertised mpg fuel economy, drives well, has the modern tech, such as Apple CarPlay and Google, as well as some safety features. Although it's not as powerful as the BMW I came from, I find it just as gratifying but in different ways. I get a kick out of how far I can drive until I need to add fuel. The truth is, you really cannot legally fully enjoy the power of a BMW on public roads, but you can fully enjoy the benefits of a modern hybrid like the Honda Insight

I love my Insight. It looks cool, is fun to drive, barely uses gas and was extremely affordable. My only complaint is the gas engine noise is a little loud but otherwise its a really great car.
