Honda Civic Type R

Long available overseas, the Civic Type R finally made its U.S. debut in 2017. It was worth the wait. The Type R offers a thrilling driving experience while retaining most of the versatility and convenience inherent to the Civic platform. In other words, it’s a classic hot hatch. And with aggressive styling, a sport-tuned suspension, and over 300 horsepower, it's a rather spicy one. Owners appreciate the Civic Type R for its remarkable handling – which suffers little torque steer despite being front-wheel drive – as well as its comfortable and well-appointed cabin. On the downside, some dislike its polarizing exterior design, premium price tag, and lack of an available automatic transmission. Nevertheless, the Type R excels as a high-performance hatchback that merges practicality with exhilarating performance.

Honda Civic Type R Model Lineup

The Civic Type R is a high-performance variant of Honda’s popular compact model, the Civic. It belongs to the hot hatch segment and comes exclusively as a 5-door hatchback with room for up to five passengers. The Type R made its debut in the United States in 2017 and is expected to undergo a major generational update in 2023.

The Civic Type R comes primarily in a single trim level, known as the Touring. Over the years, there have been some limited edition models with unique color schemes and minor performance enhancements, but its core features and performance have remained consistent. The Touring trim comes well-equipped with numerous standard features, such as sport bucket seats, Brembo brakes, and a sport-tuned suspension.

The Civic Type R is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is the only option, and power is sent to the front wheels (only).

The Civic Type R comes standard with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. The Honda Sensing suite of advanced safety features, which includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and forward-collision warning, is also standard.

The Civic Type R is an excellent choice for used car buyers seeking a hot hatch with a strong reputation for reliability. Since its 2017 introduction, it has remained largely unchanged, so any model year should be a solid choice.

Fun fast car for a daily driver but has some concerning transmission issues and the center console touchscreen is a little clunky at times.

I would speak highly of the Type R's performance and value for the money. It was also surprising to find out that the fuel economy did not suffer greatly for such a good performance package.

Do yourself a favor and purchase smaller wheels/tires before acquiring the vehicle. The stock 20" wheels are ridiculous.
