GMC Sierra 1500

The GMC Sierra 1500 has always been a reliable and highly functional full-size pickup, but in recent years, it has also become one of the more luxurious and well-equipped trucks available. In fact, thanks to an exceptionally plush interior (particularly on higher trims), an array of powerful engines, and strong off-road capabilities, the Sierra 1500 annually ranks as one of the best-selling trucks in America. On the downside, some owners voice displeasure over the popular pickup's lackluster fuel economy and unrefined ride compared to rivals.

GMC Sierra 1500 Model Lineup

The full-size Sierra 1500 slots between the midsize Canyon and the heavy-duty Sierra 2500 in GMC’s lineup of trucks. With room for as many as six individuals, the Sierra 1500 is available in three cab sizes – Regular Cab, Extended Cab, and Crew Cab – and three bed sizes – a 5.8-foot short bed, a 6.5-foot standard bed, and an 8.0-foot extended bed. Properly equipped, the Sierra’s can haul as much as 2,140 pounds and tow up to 13,000 pounds.

Trims on the Sierra 1500 include the bare-bones base (renamed Pro starting in 2022), the mid-level SLE, the well-equipped SLT, and the luxe Denali. The appearance-themed Elevation and off-road-ready AT4 joined the Sierra 1500 lineup for 2019, while the ultra-rugged AT4X and range-topping Denali Ultimate arrived for the 2022 model year. The pickup offers an impressive list of available features. A rearview camera and 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen arrived as standard for 2018 (both were previously optional), while Apple CarPlay and Android Auto joined as standard equipment the following year. Advanced safety features such as forward collision mitigation and lane-keeping assist became standard for the 2022 model year after previously appearing as optional. Most higher trims employ a 355-hp 5.3-liter V8, while a 420-hp 6.2-liter V8 is optional on the SLT trim. In 2019, a 310-hp 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder matched with an eight-speed automatic transmission debuted as an optional powertrain on the SLE trim. The next year, GMC added an optional turbodiesel 3.0-liter inline-six engine with 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque; it's backed by a 10-speed automatic. Prospective owners can choose between rear- and four-wheel drive on most versions.
