GMC Canyon

The Canyon offers much of the style and utility of GMC’s popular full-size Sierra 1500 in a more manageable midsize package. Owners praise the traditional body-on-frame pickup for its surprisingly agreeable nature around town as well as its class-leading towing abilities. Its available 300-horsepower V6 earns kudos as well; however, opting for the extra grunt also means settling for middling fuel economy. Though it lacks the vast interior storage and rear-seat space of its full-size sibling, don’t let that fool you – the Canyon is not just a crossover with an open bed but a real truck through and through.

GMC Canyon Model Lineup

The midsize Canyon is GMC’s smallest truck, measuring about 20 inches shorter than the full-size Sierra 1500. It comes in two cab sizes – a two-door, four-seat Extended Cab and a four-door, five-seat Crew Cab – as well as two bed sizes – a 5.2-foot Short Box and a 6.2-foot Long Box. The Canyon’s maximum payload is 1,620 pounds, and it can tow up to 7,700 pounds when properly equipped. It shares a platform and many components with the Chevrolet Colorado, which is built by GMC’s sister company.

Trims on the midsize pickup include the bare-bones SL, the base Canyon, the mid-level SLE, the rugged All Terrain, the well-appointed SLT, and the range-topping Denali. Starting in 2021, GMC pared the non-Denali trims down to three: the entry-level Elevation Standard, the mid-tier Elevation, and the off-road-ready AT4. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration first became available in 2016 and was made standard in 2019. Some active safety features, including forward collision warning and lane-departure warning, are available on higher trims; however, adaptive cruise control isn’t offered.

The Canyon utilizes one of three available engines. Standard is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder making 200 horsepower. Higher trims offer a 3.6-liter V6 with just over 300 ponies. In 2016, GMC added an optional turbodiesel four-cylinder that generates 181 hp and a stout 369 lb-ft of torque. Most employ an automatic transmission, but through 2019 a manual gearbox was also available with the base four-cylinder. Buyers also have a choice of rear- or four-wheel drive; the latter comes standard on the AT4 trim but is otherwise optional. No electric or hybrid variants have yet been produced.

The only disappointment is that although it has a tow package it does not come equipped with a brake controller. This is an obvious requirement of anyone who tows a trailer.

I SHOULD HAVE CHECKED PAINT MORE THOROUGHLY, AS IT HAS LOTS OF FLAWS! STREET TIRES ON 4X4??? NO STORAGE UNDER BACK SEATS, NO LOCKING CONSOLE OR GLOVE BOX??? ENGINE, ROAD AND WIND NOISE COULD BE IMPROVED. FUEL ECONOMY NEEDS IMPROVEMENT AS WELL!!!

Love the truck and love driving it. It fulfills my wants and needs in purchasing it. The only change I would make would be to have gotten the 2wd/4wd option.

Love my truck. Fits the needs that I was looking for. Great on gas mileage and appreciate the roominess of the backseat area compared to my Toyota.

Since purchasing my Canyon, I have had quite a few people come up to me to compliment on its looks and were surprised at the fuel economy. My new Canyon has attracted comments and questions from strangers (as well as friends) commenting on its good looks and questions regarding performance.

The transmission takes way too long to downshift when passing, it seems to shift into each on its way down to the final gear when it completes a downshift of more than one gear at once. The delay is noticeable and dangerous as you are expecting power and have to wait for its delivery.

I love the truck! It's a shame they had multiple recalls within the first few months of selling the redesigned truck.
