FIAT 500e

Something of an Italian answer to the VW Beetle, the original Fiat 500 was produced from 1957 through 1975 and featured a rear-mounted, air-cooled engine of just 500cc (a half-liter) in size. Arriving some 50 years after the introduction of the original, today's Fiat 500 boasts many of the traits that made its forebear so beloved. The contemporary Fiat 500 has cute retro styling along with a surprisingly roomy cabin for its small footprint. Discover the ins and outs on used Fiat 500s, available now in Carvana’s inventory.

The contemporary Fiat 500 has cute retro styling along with a surprisingly roomy cabin for its small footprint. Discover the ins and outs on used Fiat 500s, available now in Carvana’s inventory.

Surprisingly Spacious

For a coupe, the Fiat 500 actually offers a surprising amount of space with two people aboard. Thanks to the upright position of the driver’s and driver’s side passenger seats, the Fiat 500 provides a wealth of legroom even for taller occupants.

Manual Transmission Offers Good Fuel Economy

Considering the diminutive size of the Fiat 500, one should expect quality fuel economy -- and it certainly delivers, particularly with a manual transmission. In fact, Fiat 500s with a manual transmission get an EPA-estimated 34 mpg combined (31 mpg city/40 mpg highway).

Distinctive Styling

Looking to stand out from the crowd? With the Fiat 500, you’ll have no issue making that wish a reality. The Fiat 500 is unlike anything else you’ll see on the road, making it a distinctive and personable ride with enough sportiness to justify the fashion statement.

Acceleration

Though sporty and fun to zip around in, the Fiat 500 was underwhelming in Edmunds performance testing. The manual-equipped Fiat 500 Sport went from 0 to 60 in 10.5 seconds, which is about a second slower than your typical economy car. Believe it or not, the automatic-equipped 500C went even slower, going from 0 to 60 in 12.4 seconds.

Headroom

While it may offer up suitable legroom for passengers up front, the headroom issue is noteworthy. This is due in large part to the available sunroof, which cuts into headroom. If you’re 5-feet-8 or taller, we might suggest revisiting the Fiat 500 as an option. Moreover, rear-seat passengers have have even less space for head and legs.

Rearward Visibility With Convertible

One way to skirt the headroom issue is opt for the Fiat 500 convertible, however with that, the driver’s rearward visibility is notably reduced. With no rearview camera available, this can be a pain point for individuals who find themselves in the market for this vehicle.

The main problem with my FIAT 500e is the iPhone app. Despite working with FIAT on this, the app doesn't get notifications about charging etc. from the car. This has never been fixed and it seems that FIAT doesn't know how to fix it either. That is disappointing. The other issue with the car is that it's too cheaply made for such an expensive car. It's a $15k car that sells for $32,700. For $32k one expects a properly integrated nav and infotainment system with at least a 7" screen, much better seats, higher quality interior materials etc. If the 500e were $20k, one could maybe accept the fit and finish, but it's not. I will not buy this car at the end of my lease. The residual value is a joke, but more important are the issue above, about fit and finish and quality of materials. Unless the next gen 500e makes serious strides in the fit, finish and quality of interior materials, I will be looking at other EV's. I would like to point out that for my use case, the range of 87 miles is sufficient so I have no issue with that, but then, I don't commute in my 500e. However, in three years time, when my lease is up, there will be plenty of competitors with much greater EV range, so that could be an issue when it comes time to buy/lease a car again. I am impressed with the drivetrain. But it's very obvious that the batteries are taking up a lot of room because the backseat is essentially useless and the trunk area is tiny. Most of the time I'm alone in the car so I can fold down the seats if needed, but once in a while we want to fit all four of us in the car, and it's painful. Again, if it were a $15k car, that would be OK, but it's not. So, good first effort in the EV space, but you need to step up it significantly going forward!

I love the look and driving experience. I don't like about the fact I have to enter the key to start the engine, sound system is not good, cargo area is too small. It's very noisy when A/C is on. Battery goes low very fast when A/C is on.

About the Fiat 500e - overall very nice, I'm happy with the vehicle. Specific things I'd like improved: The little insert curved review mirror on the driver's side is worse than useless. I can't look at it without taking almost a second to focus, and that's not safe. So it's a loss of view. I don't care for the fact I can't lock the door without honking the horn. Why increase noise pollution? So I manually insert and turn the key. It'd be nice to put the charging jack at the front of the car, since most charging stations are at the front of parking spaces. The sunroof should have an opaque, reflective closure, so the heat and light can't get through when the inner closure is in place. The smartphone app that's supposed to let me do all sorts of things is uselessly buggy. Look at the reviews on line - a solid one out of 5 stars. So I erased it from my phone.

My main reason for purchasing this vehicle was that I wanted a small vehicle that is easy to park and that is a plug-in electric vehicle and that was a good price. This vehicle had all 3 qualities I was looking for. I probably would have paid a little more if a little more luxury was available.

The Owners' manual in the form of a DVD did not work. There were technical issues. I tested it on 4 PC, and same problem. The one line version did work OK. I do like the car and enjoy driving it. I live in Southern CA where charging stations are all around. The real limit on the car is the slow charge rate. Even 100 mile range would be OK around here if the charge rate were faster. The doors need a stronger detent in the open positions. They will not stay open in a lite breeze or on a sloping driveway. The sun visors are not well designed. The windshield is very narrow, but the side windows are LONG. The visors need to have extenders to serve when the sun is in the side windows.

Although I do like the new vehicle, there a reason a few things I would change. The front seat belts are awkward to reach. The driver side mirror is hard to get use to, should have just been a regular mirror. It has a horrible driver side blind spot. Lastly, the armrest are annoying and uncomfortable, they don't go all the way up and come too far down. Is having the armrest being adjustable really going to break the bank?

I really love my Fiat 500e. It's even better than expected. It has a smooth ride, excellent control and very comfortable interiors. I mostly love that I never have to visit a gas station again, and that it plugs into my house that is solar powered.

I own a Fiat 500E, and I have serious concerns with the miles per charge. Although I always charge the vehicle to 100% (which I was told would be 120 miles), the car charges to read only about 95 miles at a full charge of100%, and I am able to drive only about 40 miles on that charge. This is not adequate for my needs.
