FIAT 500c

In 2012, Fiat returned to the U.S. market with a charming throwback to its 1950s city car, the 500. And as if that weren’t cute enough, the Italian automaker also brought over a convertible version, known as the 500c. Its power-folding cloth roof, which comes in a variety of colors, ups the fun factor significantly, making a run to the store feel like an open-air jaunt through the Tuscan countryside. Owners of the 500c praise it for its nimble handling, abundant style, and comfy front seats. On the downside, acceleration from its 1.4-liter four-cylinder is a bit sluggish, and its tiny rear seats are more decorative than useful. Additionally, when folded, the convertible roof impinges on rearward visibility.

FIAT 500c Model Lineup

Produced from 2012 through 2019, the 500c is a convertible version of Fiat’s subcompact city car, the 500. The four-seater is the smaller of two drop-tops offered by the Italian automaker, measuring about 20 inches shorter than the 124 Spider, a two-seat roadster. Fiat also produced a high-performance variant known as the 500c Abarth, which is reviewed separately.

Motivating the Fiat 500c is a 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine, which initially made 101 horsepower but was upgraded to 135 hp in 2018 thanks to the addition of a turbocharger. Power routes to the front wheels (only) via either a standard five-speed manual or an optional six-speed automatic transmission.

Fiat built the 500c in three trims: the entry-level Pop, the mid-range Easy (for the 2016 model year only), and the upscale Lounge. The Pop comes with a power-retractable fabric roof, rear parking sensors, keyless entry, air conditioning, cloth upholstery, and cruise control. Bluetooth audio became a standard feature in 2015 and was joined by a 5.0-inch infotainment display one year later; however, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration was not offered on the 500c. The mid-tier Easy trim adds alloy wheels, a digital instrument panel, and an upgraded Alpine sound system, while the more luxurious Lounge further offers automatic climate control and, as of 2016, leather upholstery and heated front seats. No active safety features or driving aids (such as blind-spot monitoring or adaptive cruise control) were available on the 500c.
