Dodge Durango

The Dodge Durango stands out in the crowded midsize SUV segment thanks to its commanding road presence, roomy cabin, and range of powerful engines. Catering to families as well as performance devotees, it combines a smooth ride with impressive capabilities. Owners also appreciate its user-friendly infotainment system. On the downside, the Durango's thirst for fuel and run-of-the-mill interior quality are sore spots for some. Nevertheless, it remains a compelling option for those who prioritize power and bold design over fuel efficiency and premium finishes.

Dodge Durango Model Lineup

The Dodge Durango is a midsize SUV with three rows of seating and room for up to seven passengers. The model is currently in its third generation, which began in 2011. It is situated above the smaller Dodge Journey in the brand's lineup and shares its platform with the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Properly equipped, it can tow up to 8,700 pounds.

Dodge has sold the Durango in a range of trims, including the SXT, GT, Citadel, R/T, and SRT. The SXT serves as the base trim, while the GT and Citadel trims offer increased levels of features and luxury. The R/T and the SRT are the sportier versions, with the range-topping SRT boasting the most power and performance.

The Durango comes with a few different engine options. The most common is a 3.6-liter V6, available in the SXT, GT, and Citadel trims, which offers up to 295 horsepower and a choice of rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. The R/T trim comes with a 5.7-liter V8 that produces 360 hp and can also be paired with either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. The high-performance SRT boasts a 6.4-liter V8 with 475 hp and standard all-wheel drive.

Over the years, Dodge has introduced various new technology and safety features for the Durango. The automaker’s Uconnect infotainment system with a 5-inch touchscreen became standard in 2014, while an 8.4-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration was introduced in 2017. Advanced safety features such as adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and forward collision warning with automatic braking are also available on higher trims or as part of optional packages.

We recommend models from 2014 and later due to a significant refresh that year which included updated exterior styling, improved interior materials, and the introduction of an eight-speed automatic transmission for enhanced performance and fuel efficiency. In terms of trims, the GT or Citadel models provide a balance of comfort, convenience, and performance at a reasonable price point. For those who prioritize power and towing capabilities, the R/T trim with the 5.7-liter V8 engine is a solid choice. For maximum performance, though, nothing can beat the SRT’s exceptional power and impressive handling.

I thought our vehicle was supposed to have a rechargeable flashlight mounted in the rear, but while our vehicle has a place for it, no flashlight was included. Our control settings (easy-exit seats, power locks) have been set up in our control panel, yet are not operating properly.

I love the Durango. The only complaint I have about it thus far is that the Eco Mode defaults to on each time the vehicle is started. The setting should be allowed to be defaulted to the mode that you most often use while driving.

We have found that the sun tends to glare off some of the trim surrounding the displays on the dash. A brushed finish that would not glare as much might be nice.
