Dodge Challenger

Drawing from its 1970s muscle car roots, the Dodge Challenger offers distinctive retro styling and a range of powerful engines, which are more than happy to smoke the rear tires whenever you smash the go pedal. Unlike the original, though, today’s Challenger is a thoroughly modern car, complete with a quiet and comfortable cabin that includes most of the conveniences buyers want these days, such as smartphone integration and advanced safety tech. Owners of the Challenger give it high marks for these qualities as well as its surprisingly large trunk. On the downside, some find the rear seats a bit cramped and rearward visibility somewhat limited. Also, not too surprisingly, its prodigious levels of power translate into an expensive thirst for fuel.

Dodge Challenger Model Lineup

The Challenger is a full-size sports coupe with room for up to five passengers. It’s the only two-door model in Dodge’s lineup, and it shares a platform and some components with the automaker’s full-size sedan, the Charger. Both models are expected to be discontinued after the 2023 model year.

Dodge has sold the Challenger in a wide array of trims, which largely correspond to the car’s performance capabilities. At the lower end of the range are the base SXT and the sportier GT trims, which both employ a 3.6-liter V6 engine that makes a little over 300 horsepower. Stepping up to the mid-range R/T trim introduces V8 power – specifically, a 5.7-liter unit with about 375 hp. The R/T has some even more powerful variants, including the R/T Scat Pack and the R/T 392, which boast a larger 6.4-liter V8 with 485 hp. At the top of the range are the high-output SRT trims, which include the SRT Hellcat, the SRT Redeye, and the SRT Super Stock. With the exception of the SRT 392 (which employs the same 485-hp mill as the more powerful R/T models), they up the ante significantly with a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 that makes over 700 horsepower – and up to an astonishing 840 ponies on the SRT Demon, which was offered for the 2018 model year only. The Challenger has also been offered in numerous special editions, including the retro-inspired T/A and several Widebody versions, which are distinguished by fender flares that accommodate wider wheels and tires for improved handling.

Challengers with the V6 engine come standard with an automatic transmission, which was upgraded from five to eight speeds in 2015. Most V8-equipped versions, on the other hand, also offer a six-speed manual for those who like to row their own gears. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive became available as an option on some V6 models starting in 2017.

Since 2015, the Challenger has been available with a range of active safety features and driving aids, including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and forward collision mitigation; however, they are all optional. A rearview camera first became standard equipment in 2015, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration followed in 2017.

Although I'm not too happy about receiving a recall notice concerning the alternator, and electrical issues, I am glad that it came in a timely fashion. This said, an emphasis on higher standards of equipment used in the manufacturing of these vehicles needs to be implemented. If a car manufacturer talks the talk, then a vehicle such as this should walk the walk, trouble-free. Regardless, I really do love my Dodge Challenger!!

iPod takes forever to sync. Radio has just turned off all sound. iPod errors out and is unreadable.

This car has been everything that I imagined it to be and then some. I truly do enjoy driving the car.

Great looking car but I should have gone with the R/T with electronic package. Six cylinder has good MPG but very "lacking" on take-off until it gets into power band. I added remote start (elect package). Headlights should cast farther down the road. Driver's door armrest is really bothering me. My left elbow rests directly on top of the pull handle and makes it VERY uncomfortable while driving.

Grabs attention wherever it goes. Filling with gas always takes longer because people have to look at it, fine with me! Just one question, when will we see a CONVERTABLE????????? Tired of seeing bow ties and hay burners with the top down.

The only problem is when it's freezing outside and the windows get wet they freeze and won't come down the little bit they are supposed to allow you to shut the door when you open it. Needs some sort of window heater and a remote start so you can thaw out the windows.

For manual transmissions, the "1st-4th" gear set up is unsatisfactory. In suburban/city driving, it is a major inconvenience, and almost a safety hazard. For myself at least, I didn't buy a 375 hp Dodge Challenger for fuel economy, we want a true manual transmission, not one "forcing" into economy mode during certain driving conditions.

Needs optional deeper seat for taller drivers. Need more leg room in back seat. This needs to be available as a convertible! I shopped and purchased online to find the exact vehicle I wanted and at the best price. I am enjoying this car more than I ever thought possible!

The Dodge Challenger is a car I have wanted since I first saw it in 1971 when I was 11 years old. I saw it again for the first time in 2009 and the effect was visceral. So after my kids were old enough and had cars of their own I knew it was time to finally pull the trigger on a dream I has for 44 years.

The hood of my vehicle does not fit evenly on both sides. The gap is larger on one side than the other. A backup camera or sensor would have been a nice feature to have standard as the visibility out the rear is difficult. The overall length and size of the vehicle make it difficult to back into spaces also with no camera or sensor.
