BMW X7

The BMW X7 is a full-size luxury crossover SUV that delivers both loads of space and a generous allotment of performance and engagement behind the wheel. After debuting in 2019 as a bigger, roomier version of its sibling, the midsize X5, BMW’s largest SUV has gone on to establish itself as a standout within the German automaker’s deep lineup of ultimate driving machines, worthy of consideration despite its gas-guzzling tendencies and steep price tag.

The smooth ride offered by the X7 is a quality that immediately stands out for both critics and owners of this luxury SUV. In fact, per research by consumer experience specialist Strategic Vision, owners of the X7 named ride quality as the vehicle’s best feature. Steady and composed through bends and even rough terrain, it moves like a luxury vehicle should, its automatic air suspension providing a silky and relatively undisturbed travel experience.

Cabin quality is also top-notch. The X7’s cushy seats accommodate all body types, while road, engine, and wind noise are kept to a minimum. Standard heated front seats only add to the luxurious ride, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and remote vehicle monitoring and control via a smartphone app, also standard. Additional comforts such as multi-contour front seats, leather upholstery, and rear power window sunshades are optional.

Offering a comparable driving experience to the X5, its midsize sibling, the X7 is sportier than many rivals, such as the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator, especially when equipped with the available turbo V8, which produces 523 horsepower in M50i spec. That's a sizable step up from the base xDrive40i, which churns out a more-than-adequate 335 horses. The big daddy, though, is the new-for-2021 Alpina XB7, which costs nearly twice as much as the base version but adds alien-like quickness and athleticism thanks to its 612-hp powerplant.

BMW X7 Model Lineup

The X7 is a full-size luxury crossover SUV with three rows and room for up to seven passengers. It’s the largest sport-ute on the BMW roster, measuring some nine inches longer than the midsize X5, upon which it’s based.

BMW offers the X7 in three trim levels: the entry-level xDrive40i, the mid-range M50i, and the top-of-the-line Alpina XB7. Buyers also have the choice between a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six cylinder engine (on the xDrive40i trim) and a turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 (on the M50i and higher levels). The M50i was introduced as a brand-new trim during the 2020 model year. All engine options available across the X7 are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels. No hybrid or electric variants are offered.
