BMW X5 M

Though there are a growing number of high-performance SUVs entering the automotive marketplace, the BMW X5 M continues to be one of the most intriguing choices. Blessed with serious V8 power and athletic driving dynamics, the X5 M also brings outstanding utility and everyday practicality to the table – plus, it boasts all of the handsome interior touches one would expect from a luxury brand. On the downside, some owners lament the X5 M’s steep price tag, overly stiff ride, and noisier-than-expected cabin, flaws that prevent it from achieving clear “best-in-class” status.

BMW X5 M Model Lineup

The X5 M is a high-performance variant of BMW’s midsize luxury sport-ute, the X5. For most of its existence, it’s been sold in a single well-equipped trim. However, BMW added a Competition version in 2020, which offers even higher levels of performance. Both trims utilize a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, which is paired with an automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. In standard trim, it produces between 555 and 600 horsepower, depending on the model year, while in Competition guise, it returns 617 ponies. The Competition version also gets a sport exhaust, a track mode, and beefier wheels and tires, among other upgrades.

The X5 M offers a long list of standard equipment, including front and rear parking sensors, leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a panoramic sunroof. A rearview camera joined the standard-features list in 2016, while a wireless device charging pad was added in 2017. A suite of advanced safety features, including forward collision mitigation, lane-departure warning, blind-spot warning, and a surround-view camera, became standard for the 2020 model year. Apple CarPlay also became standard that year, while Android Auto followed in 2021, along with a 12.3-inch center touchscreen (replacing a 10.2-inch unit). Adaptive cruise control was initially made standard in 2016 but became optional again in 2020.
