BMW X3

Since its 2004 introduction, the X3 has been one of BMW’s top sellers thanks to its appealing blend of performance, comfort, and technology. Owners rave about its athletic driving dynamics and upscale interior, which is more spacious than many competitors. The X3 also offers surprisingly strong fuel efficiency for the segment. However, some express concerns about the higher maintenance costs associated with the brand. Also, it's worth noting that although the X3 can be equipped with a variety of advanced safety features, many are optional add-ons, while rival models offer them as standard equipment. But overall, the BMW X3 stands out as a well-rounded choice for those seeking a premium SUV with a fun-to-drive spirit.

BMW X3 Model Lineup

The X3 is a compact luxury crossover SUV with room for up to five passengers. In BMW’s sport-ute lineup, it sits between the subcompact X1 and the midsize X5. Related models (reviewed separately) include the sportier BMW X4, which shares the same platform but features a coupe-like design, and the X3 M, a high-performance variant. The X3’s most recent (third) generation, known as the G01, debuted in 2018, featuring more aggressive exterior styling and an upgraded cabin with new tech and safety features. Properly equipped, the X3 can tow up to 4,400 pounds.

Through the years, BMW has offered the X3 in a variety of trims, which typically correspond to the included powertrain. Prior to its 2018 revamp, the primary trims were the four-cylinder-powered xDrive28i and six-cylinder xDrive35i. With the introduction of the third generation in 2018, the lineup expanded to include the four-cylinder xDrive30i (replacing the xDrive28i), the performance-oriented M40i, and later, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant called the xDrive30e.

Under the hood, the xDrive28i features a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 240 horsepower, while the xDrive35i utilizes a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six, which increases output to 300 hp. A diesel variant, called the xDrive28d, was also available through the 2017 model year. The third generation’s xDrive30i retains the 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder but increases output to 248 hp, while the range-topping M40i comes with a more potent 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six making 382 hp. The xDrive30e, introduced in 2020, combines the 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder with an electric motor and a small lithium-ion battery pack, offering a total output of 288 hp and an all-electric range of up to 18 miles. All available engines pair with an eight-speed automatic transmission, which routes power to all four wheels in xDrive models, while those with sDrive get rear-wheel drive.

The third-gen X3’s 2018 launch introduced a revamped iDrive infotainment system with a standard 6.5-inch display and an optional 10.25-inch touchscreen. Apple CarPlay integration has been standard since the 2019 model year, while Android Auto joined the following year. The model’s advanced safety features have evolved similarly. In 2018, BMW made its Active Guard safety suite standard across all X3 trims, adding forward-collision mitigation, pedestrian detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane departure warning. More advanced driving aids, such as adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring, have also long been available but only as options.

We recommend that used car buyers seek out 2018 and newer examples of the X3 due to their updated design, more refined interior, and additional tech and safety features. Specifically, the xDrive30i offers a compelling balance of value, performance, and luxury, while the M40i provides a sportier driving experience. If fuel efficiency is a priority, the xDrive30e plug-in hybrid, introduced in 2020, is a strong choice, as it offers significant fuel savings compared to other X3 trims.

This is our third BMW X-3 we have purchased over the last 12 years-from BMW North Scottsdale- always loved driving the car and never had any real issues. I also have purchased 3 528i BMW from you and really enjoy driving them- I have a severe Bend Spine caused from jumping out of helicopters in the Army- and the ride in both cars have been great.

Although I love my BMW X3, I think all BMWs should have the halo-headlights regardless of trim level. That is a signature brand of the BMW along with the BMW emblem. Couldn't believe I had to pay more for this option. Shouldn't be an option, should be standard.

The X3 rides terribly on grooved highways and BMW should know how dangerous it is to drive. I'm very disappointed that I was not aware of this prior to my purchase.

The two things that bothered me about the vehicle when I bought it are still the two things I dislike: (1) The compass needs to be in the mirror. When using the navigation system, I don't want to be switching between what is on the dashboard and the compass. Call me old-fashioned but I like to know what direction I am going because sometimes I have been given directions using N, S, E, W. (2) The back seats do not fold flat. I carry a lot of stuff and not having a flat surface is frustrating.

I don't like the engine On and off function, especially in the summer when you can hear it turn on whenever you start to move.

Steering wheel has a squeak when driving on the highway. The cargo hatch closes with a bang, and should have a smoother locking system.

The run-flat tires provide a very stiff and jarring ride. I will change the tires as soon as possible to a normal tire with a degree of sidewall cushion. My test ride was with standard tires and I did not consider the difference when I selected the options.

I love the car. I hate the run-flat tires. They perform well, but have very low tread wear, and are expensive to replace.

I wish the doors would stay open when you opened them even partway. They always shut unless you open them all the way and this is painful when it hits my legs when I do not have enough room to open it all the way.
