BMW M5

Now in its sixth generation, the M5 has been one of the most iconic models from BMW since its debut in the mid-1980s. As a variant of the midsize 5 Series sedan, the M5 possesses a level of sophistication and refinement that typically comes with the BMW badge. But it also boasts a rip-roaring twin-turbo V8 under the hood. Though cost of ownership and fuel economy can be discouraging traits, the M5 delivers no shortage of heart-pounding excitement behind the wheel.

BMW M5 Model Lineup

The M5 is a high-performance sports sedan that offers room for five. In terms of size, the M5 slots just above the compact M3 and just below the flagship M8 Gran Coupe in the lineup of four-doors from BMW’s M division. BMW has primarily offered the M5 in a single trim level. However, the Competition package, which first appeared in 2014, offers a number of performance-themed upgrades, including an additional 15 to 57 horsepower (depending on the model year) from the standard turbo V8. The limited-production Competition Sport (CS) version joined the lineup in 2022, offering unique bronze styling accents as well as more power (627 hp) and reduced weight (a savings of 230 lbs) for the highest levels of M5 performance available. Originally a rear-wheel driven vehicle, the M5 got standard all-wheel drive in 2018. No hybrid or electric versions are currently available.

There are a couple of features I would like to see added to the M5. AWD is the biggest one. I would also like to see power trunk closure, a larger compartment in the center armrest, the ability to lock the glove box, and the European version of adaptive LED headlights. One other feature would be cooled (not just ventilated) seats.

I wish before I purchased the gold package braking system on my M5 that someone would have told me those brakes will squeak when stopping this is a complete embarrassment in a car with such value.

The best automobile in the world. Interior leather is a little hard with a chalky feel, not as soft as previous BMWs. I have noticed this in other current BMWs. It may be due to modern, environmentally friendly tanning processes. The M5 is the finest automobile in the world.

Car needs foglights. Doors swing very wide for entry but hard to reach from seat to close.
