In 2015, BMW spun off the two-door version of the M3 as an all-new model: the M4. Since then, the sleek four-seater has emerged as one of the fastest and most powerful vehicles in the German manufacturer’s ballyhooed lineup of high-performance vehicles.

The M4 received a total redesign in 2021, boasting new tech features and styling and buoyed by the inclusion of the most powerful M4 engine ever. Throw in the addition of BMW’s xDrive system – new for 2022 – and it’s easy to see why the M4 is so highly coveted as a high-performance coupe.

In fact, performance is the M4’s calling card, as the 2021 model year and newer editions of this vehicle sprint from 0 to 60 mph in under four seconds. Earlier M4 models (between 2015-2020) were just a hiccup slower, clocking 0-60 in just over four seconds. Either way, the M4 packs more than enough excitement for adrenaline junkies, regardless of your chosen model year. In addition to tremendous acceleration, the M4 is lauded for its impressive grip and stability through corners, making it an exceptionally thrilling ride.

Space will always be at a premium inside a coupe, but for its size, the M4 is actually a standout compared to rivals such as the Mercedes-AMG C63, Audi RS 5, and the Chevy Corvette. In fact, the M4 outclasses each of these competitors when it comes to its offerings in front head room, rear shoulder room, and rear leg room. The M4 places second amongst this group in cargo space, rear head room, and front shoulder room.

On the tech front, the M4 features some of the latest features that BMW has to offer. In 2021, BMW added a 12.3-inch touchscreen that boasts one of the best standard navigation systems on the market. Additionally, the M4 offers Apple CarPlay (with wireless connectivity), Android Auto, a Harman Kardon audio system, along with a variety of USB ports – all of which come standard. Popular features such as gesture controls, a subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot, and a wireless charging pad are optional.

Rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist are standard safety features on the M4, while BMW’s Parking Assistance Package and Extended Traffic Jam Assistant exist as handy add-ons. BMW made blind-spot warning standard in 2021; prior to that it was an option.

BMW M4 Model Lineup

The M4 is a sport coupe that seats up to four individuals. In terms of size within BMW’s lineup, the M4 finds its place just ahead of the BMW 2 Series coupe and just behind the BMW 8 Series coupe. The M3, a sedan version of the M4, checks in at the same size.

Four trim levels are available with the M4: the hard-top Coupe and Competition, the Competition xDrive Coupe, and the Competition xDrive Convertible. For the uninitiated, xDrive is BMW’s all-wheel drive system.

From the 2021 model year on, every M4 is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine, making 473 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque in the Coupe, and 503 hp and 479 lb-ft in the Competition. Earlier model years churned out between 425 and 444 horses, depending on trim. A six-speed manual transmission comes standard on the Coupe, while an eight-speed automatic has been optional from the 2021 model year to the present (a seven-speed automatic transmission preceded from 2015-2020). The eight-speed automatic is standard on Competition models.

Beautiful car, fun to drive. Electronics and controls a little glitchy. Already have some rattles.

2015 BMW M4 Base Coupe

I only have a few words to say about my 2015 M4, but it should sum it up. This car is, without a doubt, the ultimate driving machine. The more expensive models (M5, M6, etc) may have a bump up in performance, but the lightness of the M4 as well as the power output put it in a class of it's own.

I really miss the automatic seatbelt extenders that the e92 model had. That's the only major thing missing, in my opinion. Also, the tiny storage drawer on the left-hand side of the steering wheel could have a bit more of a solidly constructed feel. It feels somewhat flimsy.

My M4 has been awesome. I particularly love the up/down-shift rev-matching on the manual. Least favorite is probably the exhaust note - it's very bland and doesn't sound much like a sporty car.

The M4 is a truly fantastic car. I cant think of anything I would like to change about it. The foot sensor for the touchless trunk opening is a joke - but I don't use my trunk anyway.

I have an ongoing problem with the navigation system that the Genius has not been able to resolve. It is very frustrating to have spend so much money on this vehicle and have this system not work to my complete satisfaction and not have any idea how to resolve the situation.
