BMW iX

When you’re billed as a technological flagship built to rival an industry leader such as Tesla, there is no shortage of lofty expectations. That is precisely the position the BMW iX finds itself in. As one of the newest entrants in the all-electric SUV class, the iX boasts the kind of luxury, performance, and tech that could make anyone fall in love. However, its enormous price tag, lackluster storage space, and relatively slow-to-replenish battery could leave some wondering whether the relationship is perhaps a little too one-sided.

BMW iX Model Lineup

New for the 2022 model year, the iX is an all-electric luxury crossover SUV with seating for five. It is the largest vehicle in BMW’s i lineup of electric and plug-in hybrids and measures about the same length as its gas-powered midsize SUV sibling, the X5.

The iX comes in just a single trim for the 2022 model year: the xDrive50. Desirable tech features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on the iX, as is a curved visual display that features a 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital instrument interface. Advanced safety and driver-assist features such as forward collision mitigation, blind-spot warning, lane-departure warning, and an automated parking system are standard features, as well. Items such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and a 360-degree camera system join a long list of optional features on the iX.

Two electric motors send power to all four wheels on the iX and can generate up to 516 horsepower and 564 lb-ft of torque. The iX’s large 105.2-kWh battery gets an EPA-estimated 324 miles of range on a single charge, which is among the best in class. Recharging a battery of that size can take up to 54 hours via a standard “three-pin” plug at home. However, the iX charges much more quickly when hooked to a 200-kW fast charger, going from 10 to 80 percent in roughly 35 minutes.
