BMW i4

The i4 is BMW’s first all-electric sports sedan. Built to rival nameplates such as the Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2, the i4 mostly hits the mark, boasting a luxurious cabin and a terrific balance of agility and ride comfort. And with horsepower capable of exceeding 500 ponies, the i4 doesn’t skimp on performance either. However, compared to the Model 3 benchmark, the i4 (particularly in M50 trim) falls short not only in range but also in driver engagement, a quality that was once a BMW hallmark.

BMW i4 Model Lineup

The i4 is an all-electric compact luxury sedan that seats up to five individuals. It shares much of its look and many dimensions with the 4 Series Gran Coupe, which itself is based on the 3 Series. In terms of size, it’s the smaller of BMW’s two present-day EV offerings, measuring six and a half inches shorter than the iX, its all-electric SUV sibling. The i4 measures approximately two and a half feet longer than the subcompact i3, one of BMW’s first EVs, which was discontinued after the 2021 model year.

BMW offers the i4 in two trims: the entry-level eDrive40 and the performance-oriented M50. The rear-wheel drive eDrive40 comes with a single rear-mounted electric motor that churns out 335 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. Thanks to its dual-motor setup, the all-wheel drive M50 bumps output to 469 horses and 538 lb-ft of torque. In terms of range, the eDrive40 trim achieves 301 miles on a single charge while the M50 returns a max range of 270 miles, per EPA estimates.

Tech features such as a 14.9-inch touchscreen and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration come standard on the i4, alongside advanced safety features such as automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Active safety features such as adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist are optional.
