BMW 8 Series

The 8 Series is a luxury grand tourer available in three body styles: a coupe, a convertible, and a fastback-style sedan called the Gran Coupe. It seats four to five individuals, depending on the configuration. In terms of size, the coupe and convertible versions of the 8 Series slot just above the 4 Series, measuring roughly three inches longer, while the 8 Series Gran Coupe measures about a foot longer than its 4 Series Gran Coupe counterpart. The 8 Series also has a high-performance variant dubbed the M8, which is reviewed separately.

BMW offers the 8 Series in two main trims: the entry-level 840i and the range-topping M850i. The 840i employs a 335-horsepower inline six-cylinder engine, while the M850i gets a 523-hp 4.4-liter turbocharged V8. Both engines pair with an eight-speed automatic transmission, which routes power to the rear wheels unless the car is equipped with xDrive, BMW's all-wheel-drive system. To date, no hybrid or electric variants of the 8 Series have been offered.

As you might expect from a flagship model, the 8 Series comes well-equipped. Since its debut, it’s offered leather upholstery, heated front seats, forward collision mitigation, a wireless device charging pad, and Apple CarPlay as standard features, with Android Auto joining the list in 2021. Other available features include front and rear parking sensors, a blind-spot warning system, a surround-view camera, adaptive cruise control, and a panoramic sunroof.
