BMW 6 Series

With a history dating back to the 1970s, the 6 Series has long been BMW’s flagship luxury coupe. It boasts handsome styling and a richly appointed interior befitting a premium German brand. Buyers have their pick of several different body styles, which range from a traditional two-door coupe and convertible to a more modern “coupe-like” sedan and even a (short-lived) hatchback. No matter the shape, the 6 Series is praised by owners for its powerful engines, plush accommodations, and deft balance between handling and ride comfort. On the downside, rear-seat space can be tight, especially for the two-door versions.

BMW 6 Series Model Lineup

The 6 Series is a midsize luxury grand tourer that comes in four different body styles. Launched as a two-door coupe or convertible, the model added a four-door fastback sedan version (known as the Gran Coupe) in 2013 and a four-door hatchback variant (known as the Gran Turismo) in 2018. Slotting above the compact 4 Series, the 6 Series was BMW’s largest grand touring model until the 8 Series replaced it in 2019.

Since 2012, BMW has sold the 6 Series primarily in two trims, which correspond to engine size. The 640i features a turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine making over 300 horsepower, and the 650i employs a turbocharged V8 producing over 400 hp. Both versions come standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission, though a six-speed manual was also available on the 650i for the 2012 model year (only). Power is routed to the rear wheel unless the car is equipped with optional all-wheel drive (which BMW calls xDrive). No hybrid or electric variants were offered.

As a premium model, the 6 Series comes handsomely equipped with features, including an adaptive suspension, parking sensors, leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a 10.2-inch infotainment display with navigation. A wireless smartphone charger joined the standard-features list in 2017, which is the same year that Apple CarPlay first became available (as an option). Android Auto was never offered. Most driving aids, including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning, and forward collision mitigation, are optional on the 6 Series. Other notable options include ventilated front seats, automated parking, and a head-up display.
