After receiving a full redesign for the 2021 model year, the second-generation Acura TLX offers appealing style, enhanced technology, and upgraded performance compared to its first-generation predecessor (produced from 2015-2020). If you’re seeking a luxury sedan that is soft on the luxury price tag, the TLX is worthy of your consideration.

One of the most celebrated aspects of the TLX is its all-wheel drive system. According to surveys by consumer research specialist Strategic Vision, TLX owners who choose Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive System (SH-AWD) are treated to superior handling, thanks to its ability to route power automatically to the wheels that need it most. Athletic and controlled, particularly while navigating tight turns, Acura’s SH-AWD system offers optimal traction, evoking an elevated feeling of control on the open road. SH-AWD is optional on all V6 versions of the TLX, except for the Type S, where SH-AWD is standard.

Since 2021, all TLX trims feature a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (272 horsepower, 280 pound-feet of torque), a 10-speed automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive, except for the Type S, which boasts a souped-up 3.0-liter V6 producing 355 horsepower.

Earlier TLX models are outfitted with one of two engine options: a 2.4-liter four-cylinder (206 hp, 182 lb-ft) with an eight-speed manual transmission or a 3.5-liter V6 (290 hp, 267 lb-ft) with a nine-speed automatic. The A-Spec trim was only available with the 3.5-liter engine option during the 2018 model year, but has been offered with both engine options since 2019.

Whatever the TLX happens to lack in pure performance, it makes up for in comfort, as the front seats are well-cushioned while the rear seats offer a relaxed seating position, despite being not overwhelmingly accommodating of taller passengers. Smooth and composed riding over a variety of surfaces, the TLX also does a good job of shutting out road and engine noise, providing passengers with a largely undisturbed commute.

The TLX’s interior stylings are also worthy of mention. Though not quite as luxurious as other competitors in its class (see the Mercedes-Benz C-Class), the TLX flaunts attractive interior appointments and cabin materials, reinforcing Acura’s reputation for build quality in its vehicles.

Acura TLX Model Lineup

Classified as a compact luxury sedan, the TLX comfortably seats five. It’s the larger of two sedans currently offered by the luxury and performance division of Japanese automaker Honda, measuring about a foot longer than its smaller sibling the ILX. The TLX is much closer in size to Acura’s midsize sedan, the RLX, which was discontinued in 2021.

The TLX is available in five distinct trims: base, Technology, A-Spec (first available in 2018), Advance, and Type S (introduced in 2021). Since its introduction in 2015, there has been a range of engine options available to prospective TLX owners, spanning from a 2.0-liter four-cylinder to a 3.5-liter V6. However, no hybrid or electric options are available.

The ELS sound system is seriously lacking in power and bass. The transmission (9-speed on the 6 cylinder) is AWFUL.

Sunglasses rattle when inside the overhead sunglasses holder. Wish there were better exterior color options.

I cannot use my side mirrors because of the reflection from the vents. Horrible! I need something to cover the silver around the vents.

I really wish I didn't purchase this car there is not enough room inside and it sits very low. Getting in and out of the car is a challenge I just don't like it.

A luxury vehicle should not have a simple engineering issue in it. The constant distracting reflection of the dashboard vents in the glass where the reflection appears as something in the mirrors is unsafe and annoying. To think of all the man years devoted to design to let an issue of this type of safety and a driver awareness impediment leave the factory is ridiculous. It is obviously not just an issue for me as it's discussed on the TLX blog page by others. Also the gear change from P to D on my V6 has an initial hesitation that is weird and a bit concerning. Both these make me wonder after this being my 3rd Acura in the current household whether I'll choose to go with the brand again.

I am disappointed with the headlights. The LED headlights were touted as the greatest thing since sliced white bread. The HID headlights in my previous car (2006 Mazda 6s Grand Sport) were better.

Biggest complaint: Front seats are not comfortable on drives of 2 hours or more. Really wish sport leather seats (more firm) were available standard, or as option on TLX 4cyl base model. I know they are available on the Tech version, but I don't want all the tech, just better seats.

As a previous owner of two tls and now a tlx, I don't love new design of tlx. Don't love size; too small. Don't love center console. Also, center panel hard to read while driving. New tech package is great. I think combining two cars was a mistake. The tlx now looks like a Honda Accord. It has lost its uniqueness.

Very impressed with vehicle to date. Only 4000 miles and several trips. No problems at all. Wish I had gotten this car sooner!
