Loaded with premium materials and cutting-edge technology, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class has always been a leader in luxury sedans. In the automotive world, you often get what you pay for. In that sense, the S-Class doesn't disappoint. This vehicle has an elegant, high-status aesthetic that it supplements with top tier performance. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the luxury sedan that most other luxury automotive brands measure themselves against.

High Performance

The twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine puts out a beastly 362 horsepower. This allows the rear-wheel drive S450 to hit 0-60 in 5.3 seconds which is impressive for a full size sedan. Despite the weight of the vehicle and the power under the hood, the S-Class is quite fuel efficient. In a 200-mile highway test, the 2019 S-Class (unchanged since the 2018 update) managed 31 mpg.

Smoothest Ride

For such an impressive performance, the Mercedes S-Class drives incredibly smooth. Without sacrificing any of the vehicle control, the secure handling always feels like it is floating down the road. This is due to the adaptive dampeners and high-end air suspension system. You can also adjust the suspension by selecting between a comfort mode or a sporty mode. Additionally, there are individual settings for the transmission, engine, and steering.

Luxury Interior

Mercedes-Benz is known for its luxurious, comfortable interiors and the S-Class is absolutely no exception. All S-Class models come with all the high-tech upgrades as a standard feature. Included on the list of standard infotainment features are a pad for wireless smartphone charging, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, satellite radio, SiriusXM, navigation, Bluetooth and USB connectivity. All of these features are controlled through two 12.3-inch touchscreen displays. The seats are comfortable and include a massage function.

Limited Cargo Space

Along with many other luxury sedan competitors, the Mercedes S-Class does have a slightly smaller cargo space in the trunk. For many sedans, this isn't a problem because you can fold the back seats down to accommodate more cargo. Unfortunately, the rear seats in the S-Class don't fold down. The S-Class is primarily for hauling passengers in comfort and isn't really made to haul a large amount of cargo. The upside of the smaller trunk is it leaves plenty of legroom for passengers.

Comfort Over Sportiness

While the Mercedes S-Class has an incredibly impressive performance and is a dream to drive, it may not be quite as fun to drive as some competitor sedans. The S-Class focuses more on luxury and comfort over sportiness. This is apparent with its smooth air suspension system. There can be a moderate lean on turns, but it still reacts smoothly to all driving inputs.

Questionable Technology Features

It is obvious that the S-Class has a robust list of amazing infotainment features. However, some of the features can be a little bit distracting and mildly gimmicky. One of these is the odd hand waiving gesture to control the touchscreen. This feature, and a couple others like it, seem to be putting form too far ahead of function.
